#1 PROTECT YOUR SKIN FROM THE SUN
This is possibly one of the most important rules to live by if you want to achieve youthful looking skin and limit skin aging. Always protect your skin from the sun. Most importantly, lather up the SPF especially on your face, neck, and hands where we tend to see the first signs of aging. And don’t forget to reapply, reapply, reapply.
In addition, when you’re out in the sun, wear sunglasses and a hat (preferably a broad brimmed one) to protect your skin from the harsh rays. This will prevent wrinkles, hyper-pigmentation, and melasma, and of course sun burn that can lead to lasting skin damage.

Whether you have dry or oily skin, moisturizing is a key step to limit skin aging. Moisture protects and helps repair our skin’s delicate barrier. Your skin barrier is constantly impacted by the environment including the generation of free radicals from exposure to air pollution and solar radiation. The generation of free radicals can negatively impact our skin and lead to premature aging. (If you want to learn more about free radicals and their impact on our skin click here).
While it is difficult to protect your skin from free radicals and other environmental pollutants such as dust and dirt, you can give your skin the best shot at reducing their effects and limit aging by properly moisturizing.
Moisture also helps to repair micro tears in the skin and avoid dryness that can lead to aging. It’s best to moisturize morning and night to help your skin repair and protect itself.

#3 BE GENTLE WHEN REMOVING MAKEUP
It always mind boggling how many people will take a wash cloth and scrub their makeup off. Please stop doing this! If you don’t want wrinkles and want to limit skin aging, try to be more gentle when removing makeup.
Opt for a soft washcloth if you have to. Try to gently dab your eye makeup off rather than aggressively scrubbing it away. Or, if you don’t have overly sensitive or acne prone skin, you could try something even gentler such as coconut oil to remove mascara and eye shadow.
Also, when washing your face and removing foundation, use a gentle cleanser to wash it away. The more you tug and pull at your skin especially the delicate, thin skin around your eyes, the more susceptible you are to wrinkles and premature aging.
#4 DITCH THE MAKEUP WIPES
Makeup wipes may be convenient. But, when it comes to your skin’s health, they’re a definite no. Many of them have active ingredients which include harsh, irritating chemicals that can easily damage and disrupt the pH balance of your skin.
They can strip the skin’s barrier and dry it out. This can impact your skin’s overall health and increase signs of aging. Not to mention, when using makeup wipes you usually have to scrub and tug at your face to fully remove the makeup. These aggressive motions can cause micro tears in the skin which can lead to damage and lasting effects when used continuously.
#5 START USING RETINOL OR A RETINOID

Retinols and Retinoids are powerful chemical exfoliants which can increase skin cell turnover. As old skin cells shed off, new skin cells form and resurface creating a smoother texture and younger looking skin when used consistently for an extended period of time.
They can eventually reduce the appearance of wrinkles and skin texture by creating more youthful looking skin. They prevent skin aging when used early and often, even before wrinkles have formed.
If you’re new to these ingredients start with a product that has retinol instead of using a retinoid since retinol isn’t as harsh. In addition, give your skin time to adjust to these ingredients since they can potentially be irritating.
You could start with applying a retinol product a couple times a week and slowly work your way up to every other day or every day if your skin can tolerate it.

#6 TRY A SILK PILLOWCASE
Seriously. You need to try this. One of the biggest contributors to face wrinkles is sleeping on our sides. Think about it. We are asleep for 7-9 hours every night. When you sleep on your side, your skin presses into your pillow. Over time, this repetitive position can cause wrinkles to form.
While you don’t need to start sleeping on your back every night if it’s not comfortable for you, changing your pillow case to one that’s softer and more gentle on your skin can help.
Cotton pillow cases can tug and pull at your skin. Silk fabric on the other hand, offers a more gentle cushion for your face to rest on during long nights.

#7 STOP COMPLICATING YOUR SKIN CARE ROUTINE
![](https://i0.wp.com/easylikemonday.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/11/image0-11.jpeg?w=1100&ssl=1)
Stop using a million products. Stop doing your DIY face masks with who knows what ingredients. And please, stop changing your skin care routine every week. When you do any of these things, it can lead to skin irritation.
You can also damage your skin’s barrier by introducing too many products and not letting your skin time to adjust. Find several key products including a gentle cleanser and moisturizer (with SPF for day time). You could also add a couple products with retinol, Vitamin C, hyaluronic acid, or niacinamide to help with anti-aging and repairing the skin’s natural barrier to maintain youthful looking skin.
But, besides that, you really shouldn’t be going crazy with the amount of products you’re using. The more you over layer your skin with products and over complicate your skin care routine, the more you put your skin at risk for irritation. This can eventually lead to premature aging and reduce many of the products effectiveness that have anti-aging benefits.
#8 CHECK THE INGREDIENTS IN YOUR SKINCARE PRODUCTS
We see the ads. We admire the models with flawless skin who promote the newest skincare products. Then without thinking twice, many of us blindly buy the products without ever glancing at the ingredient lists.
The problem with this is that many ingredients found in skincare products such as makeup can be damaging to the skin. Ingredients such as phthalates, parabens, talc, and even formaldehyde have been found in some makeup products. Not only are these potentially carcinogenic but they can lead to serious premature aging and major health concerns besides.
So before you go buying whatever products, take a look at the ingredient list and spend some time doing your research. Get to know what’s in your products just as you would get to know what’s in your food.
Our skin is our most absorbent organ. Whatever you put on your skin soaks in. Make sure you really know what you’re putting on your it before you go lathering any product on.
#9 EAT PLENTY OF VITAMINS AND NUTRIENTS

They say our skin is a direct reflection of our internal health. While I’m not sure how much evidence backs that statement, it’s safe to say that vitamins and nutrients are essential. They benefit our overall health including our skin health.
Collagen for example is an essential component to building strong skin, hair, and nails so making sure to eat foods rich in collagen is key for maintaining youthful looking skin. Additionally, essential vitamins and nutrients such as Vitamin D and Zinc for example are important to keep skin healthy and limit skin aging.
#10 STAY CONSISTENT WITH YOUR SKIN CARE ROUTINE
Consistency is key to achieve youthful looking skin. Stick with putting on SPF, moisturizing morning and night, using retinol, and removing your makeup before bed.
You may not see the effects of continuing to use these skincare products and sticking with your skin care routine right away. But, years from now you’ll be thankful you did. Eventually, when you still have glowing skin and few wrinkles compared to your friends who neglected their skin’s health, you’ll be grateful you remained consistent with your skin care. You’ll be appreciative that you didn’t give up on paid close attention to the products you included in your regimen.
