Pimples, also known as acne, can arise under the skin due to a variety of factors including excess oil production, dead skin cells, bacteria, stress, and inflammation within the body. When oil glands become clogged with oil and dead skin cells, it creates an ideal environment for bacteria to multiply, leading to the formation of a pimple.
There are several different kinds of pimples, each with its own characteristics and treatment methods. Not all pimples are created equal which can make it more or less difficult to get rid of a pimple overnight, depending on which kind you have. Before you take the steps to reduce the size and appearance of a pimple fast, you want to identify which kind of blemish you have.
Types of Pimples
Whiteheads and Blackheads
Whiteheads occur when pores become clogged with oil and dead skin cells, leading to closed comedones that appear as small, white bumps on the skin.
Blackheads are similar but have an open surface, allowing the trapped debris to oxidize and turn black. Both can be treated with topical treatments containing ingredients like salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide to unclog pores and reduce inflammation.
Papules and Pustules
Papules are small, red bumps that occur when the walls of the hair follicles break down, causing inflammation.
Pustules are similar but contain pus at the surface, giving them a white or yellow appearance. Both can be treated with topical treatments containing benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, or retinoids to reduce inflammation and kill bacteria.
Nodules and Cysts
Nodules are large, painful bumps that occur deep within the skin, while cysts are pus-filled lesions that are even deeper and often more painful.
These severe forms of acne often need to be addressed from the inside out, as there’s often an underlying hormonal component or inflammation that needs to be fixed to reduce acne from the inside out.
They also often require professional treatment from a dermatologist, who may prescribe topical medications or isotretinoin, or perform procedures like corticosteroid injections or drainage to reduce inflammation and prevent scarring.
Steps to Get Rid of a Pimple Overnight
To get rid of each type of pimple, it’s essential to use appropriate treatment methods tailored to the severity of your acne and individual skin type. Blackheads, whiteheads, and pustules are typically the easiest to get rid of practically overnight.
Papules, nodules, and cysts on the other hand can be more difficult to eliminate since they’re often located deep under the skin. However, you can still reduce redness, inflammation, and the size of these by following the steps below.
Prevention
The first step is always prevention. The more you take care of your skin regularly and address your skin’s specific needs based on your skin type, the less pimples you’ll have to deal with.
When it comes to preventing pimples and acne, over-the-counter topical treatments, such as benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, or retinoids, can be effective for mild to moderate acne. It’s important to maintain a regular skincare routine, including gentle cleansing, light exfoliation, and moisturizing, to prevent future breakouts and promote overall skin health.
But if your prevention methods fail, here’s what to do to get rid of a pimple overnight, or rather reduce its appearance and size, and promote healing.
Cleanse the Skin
Start by cleansing your face with a gentle cleanser to remove dirt, oil, and bacteria. Use lukewarm water and avoid scrubbing too harshly, as this can irritate the skin.
Cleansing the skin is essential to reduce bacteria buildup, and get rid of excess dirt and oil that can make inflammation and redness worse. This step in your skin care routine cleans the skin’s surface so that your spot treatments and acne-fighting skincare ingredients can soak in and target stubborn pimples.

Alternate Ice and Heat
The difficult part of getting rid of a pimple is that you need to bring the impurities and pus to the surface to dry it out. You can do this by alternating ice and heat.
Apply a warm compress/wet washcloth to the pimple. Leave it there for a couple of minutes. Then, wrap an ice cube or ice pack in a clean cloth and apply it to the pimple for a few minutes. The cold temperature will help reduce swelling and inflammation, making the pimple less noticeable.
Do this a couple of times, alternating back and forth between warm and cold compresses to increase circulation to the area, promote healing, and reduce inflammation.
Apply a Clay Mask
The next step to try and get rid of a pimple overnight is to use a clay mask. Clay masks help to absorb excess oil and draw out impurities from the skin. They can help dry up your pimples faster and help them begin to heal.
Apply a thin layer of clay mask to the affected area and leave it on for the recommended time before rinsing off with lukewarm water. You can use this all over your face or simply as a spot treatment for the pimple itself.
Just make sure to always patch test first to assess your skin’s response to the mask and ensure no irritation occurs.
Keep the Area Moisturized
Now, make sure to apply a non-comedogenic moisturizer to keep the skin hydrated. Moisturizer will prevent your skin from becoming too dry which can increase redness and inflammation, making the pimple more noticable.
Look for a moisturizer that contains ingredients like hyaluronic acid or ceramides, which help to repair the skin barrier and reduce redness.

Avoid Picking or Squeezing
As tempting as it may be, if you want to get rid of a pimple overnight and reduce its overall appearance, avoid picking or squeezing it at all costs.
When you pick a pimple it can cause further inflammation and scarring. It may also introduce bacteria to your skin’s surface which can make the pimple worse and prolong healing.
Try a Hydrocolloid Patch
Hydrocolloid patches are pimple patches. They’re adhesive patches that help to absorb excess oil and pus from the pimple. You can apply a pimple patch to the affected area before bedtime. Then, leave it on overnight to reduce the size of a pimple fast. In the morning, you may notice that the pimple has flattened and reduced in size.
If you choose this option, you will skip the spot treatment method below until the pimple patch is removed. Also, be careful if you have sensitive skin as pimple patches can cause skin irritation for some people.
Apply a Spot Treatment
There are several spot treatments you can choose from to get rid of a pimple overnight. The one you choose will depend on your skin type. I have oily, acne-prone skin, yet it’s very sensitive. I have rosacea so any harsh spot treatment will cause my rosacea to flare up and will often cause a red spot bigger than the pimple itself. As a result, my go-to spot treatment I swear by is a sulfur spot treatment.
Sulfur-based spot treatments don’t irritate my sensitive skin. It reduces the size of pimples without causing redness or a rosacea flare-ups. However, if you don’t have sensitive skin, you have more flexibility with the ingredients in your spot treatment.
If your skin isn’t sensitive, you can consider trying benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, or a tea tree oil spot treatment to dry out the pimple faster. Benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid spot treatments will help dry up pimples quickly and reduce their size. Tea tree oil on the other hand has natural antibacterial properties that can help to reduce acne.
Dilute tea tree oil with carrier oil or aloe vera gel. Then, apply it only to the pimple using a cotton swab. Leave your spot treatment on overnight. In the morning, gently remove it with a cleanser. Follow up with a moisturizer to avoid excessive dryness and promote skin healing.

Stay Hydrated
An often overlooked step to get rid of a pimple fast is to stay hydrated. Hydration is essential to maintain the skin’s delicate barrier and to help the skin heal more quickly. Drink plenty of water throughout the day to keep the skin hydrated and promote skin healing from within.
The Bottom Line…
Remember that everyone’s skin is different, so what works for one person may not work for another. It’s essential to patch-test any new products. Relax and be patient with your skin’s healing process if you want to try and get rid of a pimple overnight.
