#1 SLEEP MORE
Of the 10 easy ways to change your life, one way is getting more sleep. Between balancing work, school, family, and our hobbies, it sometimes seems there isn’t enough time in the day to do it all. To fit everything in, something has to give. Often times, this thing is sleep.
The problem with this is that sleep is vital to our health and wellbeing. It’s when our bodies rest and restore themselves. During those precious hours, our bodies repair themselves and our brains form new neural connections.
Without enough sleep our bodies can suffer. We may feel more rundown, less productive, more anxious or depressed, even more hungry throughout the day and more likely to give into sugar cravings to combat the tiredness. So whatever you do, the more sleep you can get, the better.
The amount of sleep you need to feel rested and restored is highly individual. Experts usually recommend 7-9.5 hours. I encourage you to do your own research since the amount of sleep we need varies varies as we age, and is based on activity levels and lifestyle factors.
#2 CHANGE YOUR LIFE THROUGH POSITIVE AFFIRMATIONS
This can be a real game changer for improving self image and confidence. Each morning, when you’re hitting your alarm, instead of groaning and dreading having to get up, I challenge you to shift your mindset. Tell yourself something like “it’s going to be a good day”, or “I’m grateful for today.” It may seem silly but it’s surprising how quickly your mindset will shift for the day ahead.
Starting your morning on a positive note can set the tone for the rest of the day. In addition, when you first look in the mirror in the morning, tell yourself one positive thing. Maybe it’s something you love about yourself or one thing about yourself you are grateful for.
The more you get into the habit of starting your day on a positive note, the more likely you are to have that positivity extend into your work, your leisure activities, and your social pursuits throughout the day.
#3 MEAL PREP
Meal prepping can be an incredible way to save time and money. Try preparing meals for the whole week or even half the week on Sunday for quick grab and go lunches or dinners that you won’t have to order out for.
When I curate some quick and easy meals, I’ll often opt for a protein such as chicken, a mix of vegetables, and a carb such as quinoa or rice thats easily stored and very filling.
#4 DRINK MORE WATER
This is one of the simplest ways to improve your health. Many of us are busy with work, classes, or social pursuits, and can forget to hydrate frequently throughout the day. However, hydration is key for our health.
With water making up nearly 60% of our body, it’s vital to our organ functioning and body systems, and the integrity of our skin, hair, and nails. It’s safe to say water is crucial for our overall health so don’t skimp on it. Start making a conscious effort to up your water intake throughout the day.
#5 LEARN PERSONAL FINANCE TO CHANGE YOUR FUTURE
This is a game changer for your future. We can apply financial principles to our lives through budgeting, saving for the future, financial planning for retirement, and much more.
Learning how to properly invest can change your life, even if its a little bit here and there. This is because it is one of the easiest ways to passively earn money through compound interest and set yourself up for financial success in the future.
Even if you don’t have extra money to invest, take some time to learn tips for how to budget your money based on your income. It can really go a long way for setting yourself up for financial success and putting you in the best financial position possible regardless of your circumstances.
#6 GET ACTIVE
This is another simple one. Move your body. Whether it’s a daily walk, yoga, cross-fit, playing a sport, or lifting weights, getting active is extremely beneficial to our overall health and longevity. From improving our cardiovascular health to balancing our hormones, exercise is essential.
It doesn’t need to be super vigorous or intense if that’s not your thing, but your body can benefit from movement in any form you choose and that is applicable to your lifestyle and needs.
#7 MAKE TIME FOR YOURSELF
Regardless of how busy you are, making time for yourself can really help create balance in your life. The older we get the more jobs, school, or family take up our time. There is less time to spend on our hobbies, our individual interests, and even our goals or aspirations. That said, you deserve to make yourself a priority. It’s a way to reset and prevent burn out.
Even if it’s only 20 minutes of drawing, reading, taking a walk, or meditating before bed, making space to address your interests and needs, can easily change your life by boosting your mood, and helping you reset and reduce stress.
#8 PRIORITIZE YOUR TIME
Start figuring out what is important to you and what is less of a priority in your life. We will never get our time back, so think about what you value most in your life. What are you spending time on that isn’t contributing value to your life (aka scrolling through TikTok for hours on end…I’m guilty of this).
Maybe instead of spending time on your phone spend it with friends or family. Figure out what is most important to you and make time for those things. By managing and prioritizing your time you’ll be more productive and have time for the things you really need to get done, you really enjoy, or that you cherish doing.
#9 LEARN SOMETHING NEW EVERY DAY
Whether it’s reading a news snippet, talking to a colleague about their cultural experiences, or discovering a new recipe or beauty hack, learning something is an easy way to change your life by challenging you to expand your thinking.
Making a conscious effort each day to increase our knowledge base is an easy way to become more aware of yourself and the world around you.
#10 SAY NO
While some of us may do this easily, others of us (like myself) can have a difficult time saying no to things. Maybe its going out to dinner when you’d rather have a home cooked meal, picking up an extra shift at work, or going out when all you want to do is stay in. Whatever it is, setting boundaries for ourselves is extremely important. In both our personal lives and at work, practicing the ability to say no and not feeling guilty for doing so is a skill we all need to master.
Our time is one of the most valuable things we have. Don’t take it for granted. If there’s something you don’t want to do, don’t be afraid to put your foot down. It’s okay to say no. Take time for yourself, stay in, go out, don’t take work home with you, and do what you want not what you feel obligated to do.
